Welcome to the S8DS service !

S8DS(The S8 SI-CAT downscaler) is the project code as the pseudo global warming downscaling service leading adaptations by Ministry of Environment, Japan.

S8DS service is a user-friendly tool, and helps administrative staffs make well informed decisions about policies, programs, and projects by putting the best available evidence from research at the heart of policy development and implementation.

What you can do in the S8DS service.

1.View mode
It is mainly designed for government officials related to climate change, and has 3 functions below;
  • Universal setting
  • Extreme Event
  • Sharing (under construction)
2.Simulation mode
It is mainly a function for climate change professionals or engineers. This function is to set conditions for downscaling to calculate future data in accordance with the following 4 or 5 steps.
  • Setting area
  • Declaration of purpose
  • Simulation property
  • Land use, Urbanization (option)
  • Scenario setting
3.Calculation result mode
This is a function to confirm the results of the simulation.
Past data, future data, and differential can be viewed in the Web-based GIS.
If necessary, past and future data can be downloaded in CSV or NET-CDF format.

How to utilize the S8DS service

1.What happens if the record-breaking typhoon appears in the future?
The PGW dynamical downscaling method can answer the question “What happens if the record-breaking typhoon or heat-wave appears in the future under the condition by global warming with IPCC scenario?”
2.Climate change projection for Southeast Asian mega-cities
Climate change in urban areas has been influenced by both of global climate change and local urbanization during the past several decades, especially in the Southeast Asian capital cities.
In the future, this tendency will not stop in these cities.
However, most of the climate downscaling studies have not considered future changes of both land-use and anthropogenic heat release.
3.Case study in Agriculture sector.
  1. Future rice yields and adaptation option(*) can be simulated by using regional future climate projections of the S8DS service
*Note: When transplanting should be started in the future? What fertilizers should be used in the future?
  2. Impact models(e.g. crop growth simulation model ) are needed to simulate a project future rice yield.
In the future, MoEj will provide some these models for planning the Climate Adaptation.
